UNIVERSITY OF LIFE is in the final stages of editing, and I’m impressed at how vicious I’m getting with my red pen.
On my first three novels, I was a little in love with my own voice. I needed Lex, my awesome and brutal editor, to kick my ass and help me cut it down. This time around, I don’t need as much encourage to cut anything.
As a result, I’ve lost 5,000 words from the fourth draft. The fifth draft is usually the final one before Lex does a second pass at it. This time around, the fifth draft will be more brutal than ever.
I like the term “kill your babies”, and it definitely applies to editing. Anything, not just novels. It feels good to watch something become leaner, and better. You can’t afford to be precious. If it doesn’t work, or it’s running long: cut that shit!
Like this blog post. I could go on, but I why not keep it lean?
Speak soon, when I’ll have no hair left and a massive drink problem. I call it “final draft fever”. Just kidding, I’m sure it’ll be fine.
